The Richmond Pro Cycling fueled by Nature’s Path team has just passed the mid-way point in the season, and there’s no slowing down. Before delving into the team’s productiveness, there has been a very unfortunate incident occur concerning the team’s newest member Frederico Morini. ‘Fred’ had just made his way to the U.S. when he was seriously injured by a motorist while on a routine training ride. The accident occurred just outside of Roanoke, VA, as Fred was finishing a 4hr training session. He was violently struck from behind by a motorist, which then catapulted him up and over his bicycle onto the pavement. Fred suffered severe road rash and a deep concussion. After 2days in the hospital, Fred was released, and finally made it to Richmond to join his teammates. Unable to be cleared by a stateside neurologist to race, Fred was advised to return back to Italy for some rest and recovery. We miss you Fred- Get Well Soon.
Working Man's Stage Race
Taking place at Richmond’s Bryan Park, the three-day race enticed the Mid-Atlantic’s top talent show up. The first night ended with RPC member Gerardo Castro narrowly missing victory (by a tire width) to a Time Pro Cycling rider. With a readjustment in overall strategy, the team decided to draw Jeff Buckles closer in the general classification from his 6th place finish on the first night. On night two Buckles rode a great race, and finished 2nd in a late race breakaway. His result pulled him into 3rd place overall, with Castro still clinching 2nd overall after two events. On the last night, the team tried everything possible to win the overall, but it wasn’t to be. Castro again finished a sliver behind the winner, taking 2nd place, and solidifying his 2nd place in the overall. RPC would like to thank Stratton Delaney and Kazane racing for their accomplishment of putting on an amazing race for the Richmond area. Thank You.
Austin Texas: Round 4 of USA Crit Series
Just hours after finishing the Working Man’s Stage Race on Thursday night, RPC members Ryan Mele and Craig Dodson packed up their bikes and luggage for a 6am flight on Friday morning to Austin, Texas for round 5 of the USA Crit Series. Very tired, Mele and Dodson took to the start line against a star-studded National caliber field. With 10 laps to go Mele was involved in a crash that would later result in a late night Emergency Room visit. Dodson was able to hold onto 26th place after a blistering pace was set by Toyota United for the last 8 laps. Mele was cleaned up, X-rayed and later released at 1:30am with no serious injuries. Seven hours later, the guys were back on the plane to Richmond.
Cox Charity, Connecticut, and USA Crit’s #5
RPC ‘s Gerardo Castro narrowly missed out on the podium of NRC Event Cox Charity Criterium in Rhode Island, as he was caught 5meters from the finish line from a chasing field, finishing 10th. Castro attacked with 2laps to go, and a stiff headwind coming into the finish cost him a trip to the podium, but a great ride nonetheless. The next day (Sunday ) saw RPC members Jeff Buckles and Esteban Jukich take 1st and 2nd place at weekends second race in Connecticut. In pouring down rain, the two riders worked their way to the front of the field for a technical and slippery sprint finish. Meanwhile, RPC members Ryan Mele and Craig Dodson took to round 5 of the USA Crit Series in West Chester , Pennsylvania. With only 39 riders out of the original 110 finishing, Dodson held on for 17th place. After round 5, Dodson sits at 7th place overall in the series, while Mele maintains 10th. Nice work RPC!

The RPC boys have started their summer-long work with Broad Rock Elementary School’s I Have a Dream youth. Every Thursday RPC visits the 3rd grade students for hands on work in academic enrichment, goal setting, and problem solving. Says RPC member Ryan Mele, “ working with the kids makes me feel like more of a complete person. It’s become something I really look forward to each week- I think I get more of a kick out of the kids personalities than they get from us working with them.” Kudos for your much needed work in the community fellas!
